Measles Outbreak Spreads Across Texas-New Mexico Border

A measles outbreak that started in one of Texas’ least vaccinated counties has grown to 90 cases across seven counties, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. The outbreak may have also spread to New Mexico, where nine cases have been reported in Lea County, near the Texas border.

The connection between the cases remains unclear, but health officials are concerned about undetected community spread and transmission risks in Lea County, New Mexico. This is particularly worrisome given that only 82% of kindergarteners in Gaines County, Texas, where most outbreak cases reside, have received vaccinations.
