A second case of measles has been reported in New York City, bringing the total number of cases in the city to 15. This comes as three cases have been reported in neighboring New Jersey.
In Texas, nearly 150 measles cases have been reported since late January, with one death recently confirmed. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has linked the outbreak to the highly contagious virus.
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said that immunization is safe and effective in preventing measles and other serious diseases. He urged parents to consult with their physicians about vaccinating their children against measles.
The measles vaccine is 97% effective, especially when administered as a full two-dose series. However, unvaccinated individuals who contract the virus may require hospitalization and experience serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and death.
Measles spreads through droplets released by coughing or sneezing, and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room. The CDC reports that one in 20 children who get infected with measles will develop pneumonia, which is often fatal.
As the outbreak continues to spread, health officials are reminding parents of the importance of vaccinating their children against measles. With the virus highly contagious and potentially deadly, it’s crucial for individuals to take precautions to prevent its spread.
