A growing measles outbreak has spread across the United States, with Texas and New Mexico reporting a 20% increase in cases over three days. As of March 27, there are 483 confirmed cases nationwide, surpassing all reported cases for 2024.
The Texas Department of State Health Services reported 400 cases, mostly concentrated in Gaines County, where the outbreak began. Two deaths have been attributed to measles since the outbreak started. New Mexico has also seen a rise in cases, with one additional case bringing its total count to 44.
Experts warn that low vaccination rates and holiday gatherings are contributing factors to the spread of the disease. Infectious disease experts say that declining vaccination rates can make populations vulnerable to highly contagious diseases like measles.
Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease expert, expects the outbreak to continue spreading rapidly until the virus is no longer able to infect people. “When you’re in a population with low vaccination rates and dealing with a virus like measles, it’s going to take some time to quench and it’s going to continue to spread rapidly,” he said.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 483 confirmed cases nationwide, including 20 jurisdictions across the country. Experts predict further outbreaks in neighboring areas due to travel and community interactions.
The outbreak highlights the need for increased vaccination efforts and awareness about the risks of low vaccination rates. As the situation continues to evolve, health officials are urging people to take precautions to prevent the spread of measles.
