Measles Outbreak Spreads Across US, Cases Reported in Multiple States

A measles outbreak has been reported in multiple states across the US, with new cases emerging in Texas and Georgia. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) announced six unvaccinated cases among school children in Gaines County, while the Lynn County Healthcare System in Texas also reported a single case. In Georgia, two more measles cases were confirmed in unvaccinated Atlanta residents who are family members of an earlier patient.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been 14 reported measles cases this year from five jurisdictions: Alaska, Georgia, New York City, Rhode Island, and Texas. Nine of these cases were part of two outbreaks. The CDC warned that due to the highly contagious nature of the disease, additional cases are likely to occur.

Health officials in various states are urging parents to ensure their children receive the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination to prevent further spread of the outbreak. This marks the state’s first reported measles case since 2023 in Texas, while Georgia reports its second case this year.
