Measles Outbreak Spreads Across US, With Multiple Unvaccinated Cases

Measles cases have risen across the US, with a new case reported in Pennsylvania and an infant in Texas infected while abroad. The Montgomery County Department of Health confirmed a measles case in an unvaccinated child who traveled from New York City. In Texas, an infant was exposed to the virus during a vacation overseas, sparking concerns about the spread of the disease.

As the US cases continue to rise, health officials are urging vaccination as the best defense against measles. Dr. Desmar Walkes, with the Austin-Travis County Health Authority, warned that leaving oneself unvaccinated can lead to serious complications and even death.

The latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show 164 measles cases in nine jurisdictions so far this year. The majority of patients are unvaccinated or have unknown vaccination statuses, with 32 hospitalized due to complications from the disease.
