A new measles case has been detected at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, prompting health officials to sound the alarm over potential exposure to others. The infected passenger visited the airport twice last week and also spent time at a local Starbucks and hotel, potentially spreading the highly infectious disease.
The individual, who is not from New Jersey, arrived on a flight and visited various locations between March 25 and 27. Officials are warning anyone who may have been exposed to monitor themselves for symptoms for the next two weeks, particularly if they are unvaccinated. Measles can spread quickly, with one person capable of infecting nine out of every 10 people if those individuals are not vaccinated.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that can cause fever, cough, and runny nose before developing into a rash. There is no cure for measles, but doctors use antibiotics to treat related infections and IV fluids. Vaccination is effective in preventing infection, with a 97% success rate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported over 422 cases of measles in West Texas alone, with at least one death. This outbreak comes as the US sees its highest level of measles cases since 2019.
