Measles Outbreak Spreads in Colorado with 21 Cases Reported

Colorado has reported its 21st case of super-transmissible measles this year, with the state’s vaccination status remaining unknown for one adult. The case is linked to possible exposure at a clinic, church, and restaurants in Mesa County.

According to public health officials, symptoms of measles start with respiratory issues such as a cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed by a high fever and rash that begins at the hairline and moves down the face.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is investigating whether the cases are instances of community transmission. The state has also alerted the public about possible measles exposure at Denver International Airport after a passenger with measles was spotted on a flight.

With over 170 reported cases nationwide, hospitalizations have increased significantly, with 13% resulting in admission to healthcare facilities. Colorado’s health officials urge everyone to stay up-to-date on their vaccinations, especially before traveling, to protect themselves and others from the highly contagious disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that a total of 1,356 confirmed measles cases were reported across 41 states as of August 5, 2025. While some deaths have occurred, the vast majority of cases are linked to community transmission.
