A person infected with the measles has traveled to various locations in New Jersey, including Newark Liberty International Airport and several locations in Bergen County. The individual, who had previously traveled abroad and visited Michigan, is believed to have spread the highly contagious virus.
Health officials are warning anyone who visited these locations during specified dates and times between March 25 and March 27 could have been exposed. These locations include:
* Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (March 25)
* Marriott Park Ridge (March 25-27)
* Starbucks in Park Ridge (March 26)
* Sean O’Casey’s Irish Pub inside the Marriott Park Ridge (March 26)
* Bergen New Bridge Medical Center Emergency Department and Radiology department (March 27)
As of Wednesday, no associated cases have been identified in New Jersey. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a significant increase in measles cases nationwide over the past three months, with 378 cases confirmed – including two deaths.
The measles virus can spread through coughing and sneezing, remaining airborne for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area. It can also be spread through contact with mucus or saliva. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash that typically appears between three to five days after symptoms begin.
If you have visited any of these locations during the specified dates, monitor for symptoms that may appear as late as April 17. The measles virus can cause serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis.
