Measles Outbreak Spreads to NJ After International Traveler Tests Positive

A case of measles has been confirmed in Passaic County, New Jersey, according to health officials. The patient recently traveled internationally and visited Chilton Medical Center while contagious, potentially exposing others between July 31 and August 1. Anyone who was exposed may develop symptoms as late as August 24.

Measles is spread through coughing or sneezing, staying airborne for up to two hours. Symptoms include high fever, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a flat red rash on the face and body. Those not vaccinated against measles, including those who have not received both MMR doses, are most at risk.

New Jersey has reported six cases of measles this year, with 14 cases in New York and none in Connecticut so far. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that 2025 is the worst year for measles in the US since 1992. All residents are encouraged to stay up-to-date on vaccinations, especially those traveling internationally.
