A highly contagious measles virus is spreading rapidly across the US, with cases on the rise in northern Virginia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have warned that certain communities may be at risk due to low vaccination rates.
According to Dr. Taison Bell, Acting Chair of UVA’s Department of Medicine, “At some point, there will be cases here. It’s only a matter of time.” He advises that if you’re fully vaccinated, the risk is minimal, but unvaccinated individuals in high-risk communities should be concerned.
Measles spreads through coughing, sneezing, and airborne particles, making crowded areas like airports vulnerable to transmission. Symptoms include a cough, fever, and rash, which can lead to severe complications such as brain swelling.
The best defense against measles is vaccination, which has been proven safe and effective in preventing the disease. Experts urge everyone to check their vaccination status and reach out to a doctor if they have concerns.
