Measles Risk Elevated in New Mexico Residents

Measles cases in Texas put some New Mexico residents at risk of exposure. Two cases reported in Gaines County, Texas, bordering Lea County, New Mexico, have prompted the state to check for potential exposure among residents who travel across state lines.

According to the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH), measles spreads easily and can linger in the air for hours after a person infected has left a room. The department is urging residents, especially children, to ensure they are up-to-date on their measles-mumps-rubella vaccine.

Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a red spotted rash that starts on the head or face. Complications can occur, including diarrhea, ear infections, and pneumonia. The department is encouraging residents to confirm their vaccine records online or by calling 1-833-882-6454.

Residents can get free vaccines through the Vaccines for Children program if they are children. Adults can receive vaccinations from their provider, pharmacy, or local public health office. For assistance finding a provider, visit nmhealth.org or call the vaccine hotline at 1-833-796-8773.
