Measles Spreads in NJ, 6th Case Reported in Passaic County

A sixth measles case has been confirmed in New Jersey, with the latest one reported in Passaic County. The case is linked to international travel and health officials are urging individuals who visited a specific area of Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains between July 31 and August 1 to contact their health department or healthcare provider.

As of July 30, there have been 1,333 cases of measles reported nationwide, with three fatalities, 169 hospitalizations, and outbreaks across 38 states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data shows that the number of measles cases has reached its highest level since 2000.

Health officials are advising people who visited Chilton Medical Center’s emergency department from July 31 to August 1, as well as those on the fifth floor, intensive care unit, on August 1, to take precautions. Symptoms could emerge in exposed individuals up to August 24.

Measles is a vaccine-preventable disease that can be severe, especially in children. The MMR vaccine provides 97% efficacy against measles and is typically given to children at ages 12 to 15 months and 4 to 6 years.

The New Jersey Department of Health has confirmed the latest case is related to recent international travel, but the exact location is not disclosed. No outbreaks have been reported yet, despite six cases. The CDC data shows that measles cases have been linked to various public events and spaces in New Jersey this year.
