Measles Surge: CDC Urges Summer Camps to Verify Immunity Status

Measles cases are nearing record levels in isolated areas, prompting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to urge summer camps to verify immunity status through vaccination or prior infection.

Dr. Alexandra Yonts, a pediatric infectious diseases physician, says that unimmunized children are at high risk of contracting measles due to their contagious nature.

In sleepaway camps, close contact among campers and staff increases the risk of transmission. The CDC recommends maintaining documentation of measles immunity status for all campers, staff, and volunteers to identify those who may need post-exposure prophylaxis.

Children who have received two doses of the measles vaccine are considered protected, but unvaccinated children are at higher risk. Camps should communicate state and local vaccination requirements to campers, parents, and staff before the start of each session to ensure a safe environment for all.
