Measles Vaccination Rates Low in Native American Communities

A recent expert report warns that measles vaccination rates among Native Americans are not sufficient to maintain herd immunity, with only 76.7% of children aged 19-35 months in Oklahoma receiving at least one dose of the vaccine. The Navajo Nation has the highest rate of vaccination at 93.6%, while some communities have rates as low as 63%. Experts stress that a 95% vaccination rate is necessary to achieve herd immunity, and attribute the decline in vaccination rates to the COVID-19 pandemic. At least eight confirmed cases of measles have been reported in Oklahoma.
