Measles outbreaks have been a growing concern in the US, particularly in West Texas. Thang Nguyen is one such family who faced financial hardship due to vaccination costs. His 4-year-old son was at risk of contracting measles because he had only received his first dose of the vaccine’s two-shot series. The cost of the full vaccination for this child alone was $2,800, or nearly twice the estimated monthly rent in some West Texas areas.
The rising number of cases prompted Nguyen to take action, however, his concerns were compounded when he discovered that a family living in Galveston had been charged thousands of dollars for vaccinations. This alarming trend raises questions about accessibility and affordability of measles vaccines, leaving many families struggling to afford the necessary protection against this potentially deadly disease.
