Measles Vaccine Longevity: Expert Weighs In on Immunity

Florida health officials have confirmed the state’s first measles case in years, raising questions about immunity among those who received the measles vaccine as children. According to Dr. Vincent Hsu, an infectious disease expert and assistant professor at the University of Central Florida’s College of Medicine, having two doses of the measles vaccine as a child provides lifelong immunity.

Hsu explained that the virus has not mutated significantly over the years, unlike the flu, which requires annual vaccination due to its high mutation rate. The measles vaccine that is still used today was first distributed in 1968 and targets the same strain of the virus that caused outbreaks in the US since 1912.

While Hsu advises individuals with doubts about their vaccine status or immunity to consult their doctor, he emphasizes that the measles vaccine’s most reliable predictor of protection remains receipt of two doses as a child.
