A measles outbreak warning has been issued for two Capital Region hospital emergency departments – Albany Medical Center and Saratoga Hospital. A confirmed case of measles has been reported in an adult Vermont resident who recently traveled internationally.
The New York State Department of Health is urging individuals who visited the Saratoga Hospital emergency department on July 14, 2025, to contact the hospital directly as they may be at risk of infection. In contrast, Albany Medical Center patients who were in the emergency department on July 16, 2025 have already been identified and contacted.
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald emphasized the importance of immunization against measles, stating that protection is key to preventing the spread of the disease. “Make sure you are up-to-date on your MMR vaccine,” he advised.
Albany Medical Center’s Executive Vice President, Dr. Jason Mouzakes, assured that their team acted promptly and correctly in minimizing exposure. All partners are collaborating with both hospitals to investigate the case and prevent further spread of measles.
New Yorkers are urged to ensure they’re vaccinated against measles by checking their vaccination records and consulting their healthcare provider if necessary. Travelers should plan to be fully vaccinated at least two weeks before departure, especially those traveling with young children or unvaccinated individuals.
