Medical marijuana is set to hit shelves in select dispensaries across Kentucky soon. As of November 25, 36 dispensaries were chosen by lottery to offer the product. In Southcentral Kentucky, four dispensaries will be available, including those in Bowling Green and Franklin.
To receive a medical marijuana card, patients must have a qualifying condition such as cancer, chronic pain, epilepsy, or multiple sclerosis. They must also provide supporting medical documentation. For minors, parental consent is required.
Only licensed medical professionals with specific credentials can prescribe the medication. To become an authorized practitioner, they must apply to their licensing board, obtain DEA credentials, and complete six hours of education on medical marijuana.
Medical marijuana will be available in edibles, oils, tinctures, and raw plant form. However, smoking it is still prohibited, even with a medical card. There are also rules prohibiting users from operating vehicles or machinery while under the influence.
Patients can find more information, including a list of approved providers, on the Kentucky Office of Medical Cannabis website. The agency aims to navigate the process for patients and provide education to ensure a smooth transition.
