Medical school friends Megan Hoedt and Madison Mellquist have been riding a wave of excitement after sharing their matching Match Day results on TikTok. The two residents-to-be, who met during their first week of medical school, are set to start residency programs at the same hospital in Florida.
The best friends, both 27 and 26 years old, respectively, have come a long way since their initial days of medical school. Over the past four years, they’ve gotten married, become parents, and determined what types of medicine they want to practice.
Despite the changes in their lives, one thing remains consistent: their friendship. They met during their first week of medical school and quickly became inseparable. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Mellquist recalled how they were “basically like, ‘Are we friends now?'” after spending hours talking during lab sessions.
Hoedt added that she was “looking for wedding dresses” with Mellquist just two months into their friendship. The duo has been through thick and thin together, from supporting each other through weddings to navigating the challenges of medical school.
When it came time to apply for residencies, Mellquist had already identified pediatrics as her top choice due to its Florida-based location, which would allow her to balance work and family life. Hoedt, on the other hand, initially wanted to pursue OB-GYN residencies but changed her mind after discovering emergency medicine. She was drawn to a new program at the same Tampa hospital where Mellquist’s top-choice residency is located.
The serendipity of it all became apparent when both friends found out they matched to their top-choice hospitals simultaneously. Their excitement was palpable, and they couldn’t wait to share the news with their families – including their young daughters, Margaret (7 weeks old) and Willow (19 months old).
In a heartwarming moment captured on video, Mellquist shared footage of herself and Hoedt opening their matching Match Day results while cradling their kids in their arms. The caption read, “Women can do anything,” leaving viewers with a message of hope and empowerment.
As the two friends prepare to start their residency programs, they’re looking back on the journey that led them to success and a forever friendship. They’re excited to embark on this new chapter together, knowing that their friendship will continue to be a source of strength and support throughout their careers.
