Mediterranean Diet Beats Type 2 Diabetes, Dementia Risk

A groundbreaking study published in top journals confirms that embracing a Mediterranean-style diet with moderate exercise and support can significantly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and dementia. The PREDIMED-Plus trial followed over 4,700 adults aged 55-75, showing a 31% relative reduction in new cases of type 2 diabetes after six years. In contrast, adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet also lowered dementia risk by 25%, particularly among those with the highest genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease. These findings suggest that incorporating this simple yet effective lifestyle change can lead to substantial public health benefits.
