The Mediterranean diet has been named the best overall diet by U.S. News and World Report for the eighth consecutive year. The diet ranked first or second across several categories, including mental health, diabetes, and gut health. A panel of 69 experts evaluated 38 diets across 21 categories, with 12 new categories added this year.
The Mediterranean diet is characterized by its emphasis on healthy fats, such as extra virgin olive oil, and plant-based foods. It has been shown to lower the risk of mortality and chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease (CVD). This year’s edition also evaluated 13 new diets, including the acid reflux diet and the low-FODMAP diet.
According to Gretel Schueller, managing editor of health at U.S. News, “Best Diets’ updated rating evaluation system reflects the diverse needs and goals of individuals, considering factors beyond weight loss.” The top diets in 2025 include the Mediterranean diet, followed by the DASH diet, flexitarian diet, and MIND diet.
The Cleveland Clinic defines the Mediterranean diet as emphasizing healthy fats and plant-based foods. It is a well-rounded eating pattern that can help with various health concerns, making it an attractive option for those seeking a balanced diet.
