The American Museum of Natural History has unveiled a nearly complete Stegosaurus, dubbed “Apex,” which is being exhibited for the first time. The fossil, 11 feet tall and 20 feet long, was discovered in Colorado and sold at an auction for $44.6 million.
Stegosaurus lived during the Jurassic Period in North America, around 150 million years ago. Despite being a herbivore, it had distinctive features such as spiked tail and plates on its back, which would have provided protection against meat-eating dinosaurs like Allosaurus.
The exhibit’s curator notes that Stegosaurus was not like other herbivores, but rather an animal capable of self-defense. The nearly complete fossil is a rare find, and the museum’s acquisition is expected to generate significant interest among dinosaur enthusiasts.
Apex will be on display at the New York museum for an indefinite period, offering visitors a unique opportunity to see one of the most iconic dinosaurs in its natural state.
