A sophisticated scam is targeting Web3 professionals with crypto-stealing malware. Meetio, a company that has repeatedly changed names, is reaching out to potential targets via video calls and prompting them to download a meeting app containing the malicious software.
The scammers have gone to great lengths to convince their targets of legitimacy, creating fake company websites, social media accounts, and even AI-generated content. They use various tactics to gain trust, including impersonating known contacts on Telegram or sending investment presentations that appear to be from the target’s own company.
Once a target downloads the Meeten app, the hackers can steal cryptocurrency stored in their web browsers. Both macOS and Windows versions of the malware are available, making it a potential threat to anyone who falls victim.
To avoid falling prey, experts advise verifying sources, implementing strict security practices, and monitoring for suspicious activity.
