Mel Brooks, the 99-year-old mastermind behind the 1987 space spoof Spaceballs, has confirmed he will reprise his role as Yogurt in an upcoming sequel. The film is currently in development at Amazon-MGM, with Josh Gad co-writing and potentially starring alongside Brooks.
Gad expressed his excitement to join forces with Brooks, who first inspired him as a child after seeing Spaceballs before Star Wars. “I was that child who saw Spaceballs before I ever saw Star Wars and then wondered why anyone would do a dramatic remake of the Mel Brooks classic,” Gad wrote on Instagram.
The sequel is set to be directed by Josh Greenbaum, known for his work on Strays, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, and Will & Harper. The film has been described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two” with “Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film” – a title that promises both nostalgia and new beginnings.
According to sources, Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman will also return for the sequel, along with newcomer Keke Palmer. Brooks previously stated that he wouldn’t do a sequel without Moranis, citing their on-screen chemistry as essential to the film’s success.
Spaceballs 2 is set to be released in cinemas in 2027, marking another milestone for the beloved franchise and its iconic characters.
