Actor Mel Gibson has expressed surprise at being named a “special ambassador” to Hollywood by President-elect Donald Trump. In a statement to USA TODAY, Gibson said he was ready to serve under Trump and described his role as an opportunity to provide insight and help.
Trump announced the appointment on conservative social platform Truth Social, stating that Gibson would join fellow conservative actors Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone in promoting Hollywood’s return to former glory. The role is seen as a bid to revive the film industry, which has faced significant challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and economic troubles.
Gibson appeared to support Trump in 2020, when asked about his voting intentions, stating it was “a pretty good guess” that he would vote for the GOP nominee. Voight and Stallone have also expressed support for Trump, with Voight calling the appointment an honor.
