A Texas couple, both members of the Mennonite faith, are sparking controversy after saying their six-year-old daughter’s death from measles was a divine call. The girl died in 2022, becoming the first U.S. fatality from the disease since 2015.
In an interview with Children’s Health Defense, the parents expressed skepticism about vaccination and suggested alternative treatments like cod liver oil and vitamin A for their other children, who recovered from measles without receiving the MMR vaccine.
The father stated that measles “boosts the immune system” and wards off cancer. However, this claim has been debunked by health experts and is often repeated by anti-vaccination groups.
As of Friday, Texas reported 309 cases of measles, while New Mexico saw 42 cases. The CDC stresses that the MMR vaccine is the most effective way to protect against measles, with a 97% success rate after two doses.
