Men’s Lacrosse Semifinals Preview: Upset Potential and Championship Chances

The NCAA men’s lacrosse semifinals are set to take place at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, pitting some of the sport’s top teams against each other. The matchups feature a mix of returning contenders and underdog squads vying for a spot in the championship game.

The most anticipated matchup pits No. 1 Cornell (16-1) against No. 5 Penn State (12-4). Cornell is seeking its fourth national title, led by standout players CJ Kirst and Ryan Goldstein. However, Penn State, which has never won a championship, looks to make a deep run behind Matt Traynor’s impressive scoring numbers.

The other semifinal features No. 2 Maryland (13-3) facing off against No. 6 Syracuse (13-5). This matchup is highlighted by the Terrapins’ quest for their fourth national title and Syracuse’s 11-time championship history. Joey Spallina and Owen Hiltz are expected to be key contributors for the Orange, which has been nearly invisible on championship weekend since 2013.

Both contests will feature rematches of regular-season games, with each team looking to capitalize on its familiar opponents. The TV schedule is set for noon ET (Cornell-Penn State) and 2:30 p.m. ET (Maryland-Syracuse), with ESPN2 airing the events.
