Mental Health Decline Among Mothers Revealed by Study

A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine has found a significant decline in the mental health of mothers, with only 25.8% reporting excellent mental health in 2023. The study, which surveyed over 189,000 mothers, highlights a growing concern about the mental and physical well-being of parents.

Dr. Jennifer Harned Adams, a clinical psychologist at HCA HealthOne, attributes this decline to the increased pressure on mothers to balance work and family life. With more women working outside the home and dual income households becoming the norm, the financial burden of childcare is significant. Additionally, many young families lack an extended network of support from family members.

Dr. Adams emphasizes that while it’s natural for mothers to feel stressed and overwhelmed, acknowledging these feelings is a sign of self-awareness and good parenting. She suggests simple changes, such as trading off responsibilities with neighbors or friends, can help alleviate the load.

Experts agree that prioritizing mental health, sharing hard moments, and seeking support from others are crucial in addressing this issue. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has shared resources for mothers seeking help.
