Mark Zuckerberg and Palmer Luckey, once tech rivals, have ended their beef as they partner with Anduril to build wearable tools for the US military. The two companies will share resources to create next-gen extended reality gear, dubbed Eagle Eye, which utilizes AI and sensors in new headsets and wearables to enhance vision and detect threats.
The partnership, valued at an estimated $31 billion defense tech market, marks Big Tech’s growing interest in the defense industry. Anduril’s Lattice platform will provide real-time battlefield intel using AI command-and-control technology. Meta’s Reality Labs and Llama AI models will also be utilized in the project.
Anduril raised $1.5 billion in August 2024 and is reportedly raising up to $2.5 billion more, while the US military can expect significant cost savings with this private capital-funded project. The announcement comes amidst a surge in venture cash and Big Tech interest in defense technology.
The partnership between Meta and Anduril also reflects a shift in the companies’ stance on politics, as Luckey was ousted from Facebook in 2016 after donating to a pro-Trump group. However, it appears both executives have put their past differences aside, with Zuckerberg publicly praising Luckey’s work at Anduril for national security.
