Meta Announces Enhanced Safety Features for Instagram Users

Meta aims to protect young users from harm on its platforms. Recent updates focus on Teen Accounts and exploitative content removal. New safety features have been added to DMs in Teen Accounts, providing teens with more context about suspicious accounts and helping them spot potential scammers.

Teens will now see options to view safety tips and block an account, as well as the month and year the account joined Instagram, prominently displayed at the top of new chats. A combined block and report option has also been introduced in DMs, making it easier for teens to report violating accounts.

The company’s Location Notice was seen by 1 million users in June, with 10% tapping on it to learn more about steps to protect themselves from sextortion scammers. Nudity protection, which is now enabled by default for teens, has kept most people from forwarding suspected nude images.

To address the issue of adult-managed accounts primarily featuring children, Meta will automatically place these accounts in strict message settings and turn on Hidden Words. These changes aim to prevent unwanted messages and protect young users from abuse.

The company continues to take action against accounts that break its rules, removing nearly 135,000 Instagram accounts this year for leaving sexualized comments or requesting images from child-focused accounts. Meta also shares information with other tech companies to combat exploitation and encourages users to be cautious and block/report suspicious activity.
