Meta has obtained an emergency ruling in the US to temporarily stop a former director of Facebook, Sarah Wynn-Williams, from promoting her memoir “Careless People”. The book, which includes critical claims about her seven years working at Facebook, alleges that executives worked with the Chinese government to censor and control content. Meta disputes these allegations, stating it never pursued plans to operate in China.
The arbitrator found that Meta would suffer “immediate and irreparable loss” without a temporary ruling in the case. The book’s publisher, Macmillan, was not required to take any action. A hearing will be held unless the ruling is modified or lifted following a full hearing. Wynn-Williams had planned extensive media appearances worldwide but was prevented from doing so due to the court order.
The book, released Tuesday in the US and Thursday in the UK, is number six on the Amazon chart. Meta’s spokesperson described the book as “false and defamatory”. Macmillan stated it is committed to upholding freedom of speech and Wynn-Williams’ right to tell her story, but was bound by the court order.
