Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is personally leading an initiative to create “superintelligence,” machines that can surpass human capabilities, according to a Bloomberg report. The project aims to hire about 50 people and assemble a new AI team near his office at the company’s Menlo Park headquarters.
Zuckerberg’s frustration with Meta’s current AI efforts led him to take on this task directly. He has been pushing to reposition Meta as an AI powerhouse, but his intensity has increased following rival OpenAI’s advancements in artificial intelligence. The project is reportedly funded by Meta’s advertising business and may include a $1 billion investment in startup Scale AI.
The goal of “superintelligence” is to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI), where machines can accomplish anything humans can do. However, the technology still needs significant development before it can reach that level. Zuckerberg’s team faces competition from major players like OpenAI, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Apple, as well as other startups with substantial funding.
Many tech leaders believe AI poses a threat to their businesses, but Meta aims to differentiate itself by making its Llama AI model open source. The project is seen as an attempt to catch up with the AI landscape dominated by ChatGPT-maker OpenAI.
