Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, is pushing back the release date of its mixed reality glasses “Phoenix.” The new devices were initially planned for the second half of 2026 but are now expected to arrive in the first half of 2027.
The delay comes after leaders stated that they need more time to get the details right and ensure a fully polished experience. This decision was made by Maher Saba, VP of Reality Labs Foundation, who wrote in an internal memo that extending timelines would not be used to add features or take on additional work.
Instead, Meta is focusing on other projects, such as its next-generation Quest headset and a wearable device code-named “Malibu 2.” The company is also working on a new AI-powered device. In October, Meta reorganized its metaverse unit and tapped two leaders to co-lead the efforts.
While Meta declined to comment, employees who have seen the devices described them as having a goggle-like form factor and being connected to a puck for power. The release date change is not a surprise, given the complexity of mixed reality technology and the need for a reliable experience.
The delay may be a sign that Meta wants to prioritize quality over speed in its metaverse efforts. As the company continues to expand its AI hardware push and acquire new startups, it’s clear that Meta is committed to innovation in the virtual world.
