Tech giants like Meta and Microsoft are seeking federal approval to trade electricity as they build massive AI data centers. This move aims to secure long-term power deals, reduce risk, and speed up new plant construction.
Meta’s head of global energy, Urvi Parekh, believes power developers need assurance that tech companies will invest in the infrastructure. Without this commitment, projects won’t progress quickly enough.
A recent example illustrates the enormous energy needs: Meta plans to build at least three new gas-powered plants for its Louisiana data center campus alone.
