Meta has blocked the promotion of “Careless People,” a memoir by former staffer Sarah Wynn-Williams that claims the company allowed sexual harassment and attempted to censor content for Chinese authorities. An emergency arbitrator ruled Wednesday that Wynn-Williams is prohibited from promoting the book, citing a non-disparagement clause in her severance agreement.
Wynn-Williams’ memoir chronicles her time at Facebook (2011-2017) and includes allegations of inappropriate comments by company policy chief Joel Kaplan. The company denies these claims, calling them “out-of-date” and claiming Wynn-Williams was fired for “poor performance and toxic behavior.” Meta says the book contains false accusations against executives.
The emergency arbitrator also blocked Wynn-Williams from publishing or distributing more copies of the book, retracting her previous disparaging remarks about the company, and repeating similar comments. Flatiron Books, the publisher, said it would continue to promote the book despite the ruling.
