Meta Invests $1B in Geothermal Energy Project in New Mexico

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is teaming up with California-based XGS energy to bring a massive investment to New Mexico’s geothermal energy sector. The partnership aims to power Meta’s data centers using 100% renewable electricity.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham praised the collaboration, saying it will provide base load power and reduce the state’s carbon footprint. Geothermal power harnesses natural heat from the ground to generate electricity, making New Mexico a prime location for this technology.

The XGS plant, located in northern New Mexico, is expected to be operational by 2030. CEO Josh Preuher emphasized that the project will not require significant water usage after drilling, making it environmentally friendly. The site has yet to be selected, but officials are optimistic about the potential of geothermal energy in the state.
