Meta has ended its key diversity, equity and inclusion programs, joining other major companies like McDonald’s, Walmart, Ford, and Harley-Davidson in abandoning their efforts. The decision comes after the US Supreme Court banned affirmative action in college admissions and amid pressure from conservative activists.
The move follows a trend seen among other corporations, including motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson and farm equipment manufacturer John Deere, which have also pulled the plug on their diversity initiatives. Companies like Apple, Costco, and Target continue to maintain and defend their DEI policies, with some even citing economic benefits of having diverse workforces.
A Meta spokesperson confirmed the termination of its DEI programs, citing an internal employee memo. The decision is seen as a response to changing legal and policy landscapes surrounding diversity efforts in the US.
