Meta Ray-Ban Display Glasses Unveiled: A Futuristic Wearable?

Meta’s latest smart glasses, the $799 Ray-Ban Display, are here. The company aims to make its vision of headsets and glasses becoming the preferred computing method a reality. But how do these innovative glasses perform in real-life use? We tried them out at Meta’s Connect event.

The display on the new glasses is simple, with just a small digital screen in the right lens. It enables unique visual functions like reading messages, photo previews, and live captions. The device requires an EMG sensor wristband that detects electrical signals from your body to control it via hand gestures.

We found the experience to be both novel and challenging. The display can be hard to see with real-world objects in view, causing icons to appear murky. However, the gestures worked well once we got the hang of them. Interacting with the screen was fun, but also required some practice.

One notable feature is the live captions feature, which successfully picked up the tour guide’s voice amidst background noise. The wristband also allowed us to adjust music volume on Spotify, a delightful experience.

While the high price may deter consumers, the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses are an attractive option for developers seeking new platforms for their apps. As Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of headsets and glasses becoming the future of computing takes shape, these innovative glasses are certainly worth keeping an eye on.
