Meta’s smart glasses, developed in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica, have seen accelerating sales since their launch in late 2023. Over 2 million units have been sold, with users able to ask questions about the world around them using voice commands. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed optimism about the product’s long-term potential.
The company has also announced plans for Oakley-branded smart glasses and is exploring its own augmented reality (AR) glasses prototype called Orion. Analysts note that while monetization potential is still years away, smart glasses create optional pathways for AI distribution and could expand Meta’s role beyond social media.
As the wearable tech market continues to grow, Meta aims to provide users with more utility during their day, ultimately serving them more ads and driving revenue. However, achieving “critical mass distribution” that would be disruptive to Apple’s dominant iOS ecosystem remains uncertain.
