Meta has made its biggest reorganization of artificial intelligence operations to date, consolidating four distinct teams that focus on research, training, products, and infrastructure. The move is aimed at accelerating the company’s efforts to build “personal superintelligence,” a term coined by leader Alexandr Wang.
Wang’s memo outlined the changes, which include establishing a new organizational structure with most team leaders reporting directly to him. The reorganization includes:
* TBD Lab, a small team focused on training and scaling large AI models
* FAIR, Meta’s long-standing AI research organization, now acting as an “innovation engine” for MSL’s training runs
* Products & Applied Research, bringing product-focused research efforts closer to product development
* MSL Infra team, unifying elements of infra and MSL’s infrastructure teams into one
The reorganization comes after Meta assembled an all-star team of talent, trying to poach researchers from rival AI labs with massive offers. However, tensions have emerged within the newly formed team between lavishly compensated new hires and existing researchers.
Wang warned that organizational changes can be “disruptive,” but believes it’s necessary to increase the company’s pace in achieving superintelligence. The reorganization aims to centralize core research efforts, bolster product efforts with applied research, and establish a unified infrastructure team.
The move raises questions about whether Meta can stay at the cutting edge of AI after multiple reorganizations in less than six months.
