Meta Sets $15 Billion AI Bid on Superintelligence

Meta is set to announce a $15 billion bid to develop “superintelligence” in artificial intelligence, according to reports. The move comes as the Silicon Valley AI race intensifies, with other competitors such as OpenAI and Google also making significant investments.

The deal involves Meta buying a 49% stake in Scale AI, a startup led by 28-year-old Alexandr Wang. This move is seen as an attempt by Meta to regain the initiative over AI development after failing to achieve significant success with its Metaverse concept.

Experts say that superintelligence refers to AI that can perform better than humans at all tasks. However, this goal remains elusive, and many mainstream systems have struggled to reach human-level performance in various tasks.

Professor Michael Wooldridge from the University of Oxford believes that governments should collaborate on AI development to ensure transparency and public trust. He notes that Meta’s investment in the Metaverse was significant but ultimately failed.

Dr Andrew Rogoyski, director of partnerships and innovation at Surrey University, says that Meta’s approach is different from its competitors’ focus on achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). Instead, Meta views AI as an enabler for its business, allowing it to take a longer view in its development.
