Meta is planning to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) characters on its social media platforms Instagram and Facebook. The AI characters, which will coexist with existing accounts, will have bios, profile pictures, and be able to generate and share content powered by AI.
According to Connor Hayes, vice president of product for generative AI at Meta, the company has created hundreds of thousands of AI characters using a tool launched in July 2023. While some users have kept their AI characters private, Meta plans to expand its reach in the future.
The introduction of AI-generated content raises concerns about misuse and eroding user confidence. However, Meta’s rules state that AI-generated content should be clearly labeled. To address this, Meta has introduced AI-powered features such as photo editing tools, AI assistants for creators, and plans to add text-to-video generation software next year.
AI chatbot prototypes, known as “personas,” are also in development. These personas will engage with users in human-like conversations and provide a new search function and recommendations. In September 2023, Meta introduced 28 AI-powered personas with unique personalities and interests.
The company has taken a lighthearted approach to the development of its AI chatbots, even asking them for New Year’s resolutions related to payments and financial habits. The responses included humorous suggestions such as not using “password” as a password or resisting the urge to invest in companies just because of their logo.
