Meta Trains AI on EU Public Content for Improved Cultural Understanding

Meta is launching a new training program for its artificial intelligence (AI) models using public content shared by adults on its European platforms, such as posts and comments on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. The training will also use user interactions, including questions and queries.

Starting this week, users in the EU who access Meta’s platforms will receive in-app notifications explaining how their data will be used to improve AI performance and overall user experience. Users can opt-out of having their data used at any time by submitting an objection form on the platform.

This move aims to enhance Meta’s AI capabilities to better understand European cultures, languages, and history. By training its models on a diverse range of data, Meta believes it can build AI that is not only available but also tailored to specific regional needs.

The training program follows the successful launch of Meta AI in Europe last month, which marked the first step towards making Meta’s chat function accessible for free across European messaging apps.
