Meta has announced a massive underwater cable project, dubbed Project Waterworth, which aims to connect the US, India, South Africa, Brazil, and other regions. The 50,000km subsea cable will be the longest to date, using a 24-fibre-pair system for higher capacity.
According to Meta, the project will bring industry-leading connectivity to key regions, facilitate digital inclusion, and support technological development. The company believes this will accelerate progress in India’s digital economy, where it has already seen significant growth.
This latest initiative follows Meta’s track record of driving infrastructure innovation, with over 20 subsea cables developed. However, the importance of undersea cables is highlighted by concerns about their susceptibility to attacks or accidents, and being a target during geopolitical tensions and conflict.
As the internet relies heavily on these cables, nations are increasingly calling for better protection measures. The UK’s National Security Strategy has recently issued a call for evidence on protecting undersea cable infrastructure from threats.
