Meta’s humanoid robot, dubbed Metabot, is a significant step towards building the backbone of robotics’ future. Unlike Android, which is exclusive to smartphones, Meta aims to create a software platform that can be licensed to companies manufacturing humanoid robots. The company’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth, believes software is the bigger challenge in robotics.
To overcome the challenges of humanoid robots, Bosworth’s team is collaborating with Superintelligence AI lab at Meta. They’re developing a “world model” that will help animate a dexterous hand and tackle tasks like picking up objects. However, building a software backbone for humanoid robots faces significant hurdles, including operating with unstable objects.
Other companies, such as Apple and Tesla, are also investing heavily in robotics. Despite the progress made by these tech giants, Meta’s AI-powered platform holds promise for revolutionizing the field of robotics.
