Meta Platforms, Inc. is making a massive push into artificial intelligence (AI), but its efforts are being matched by rival OpenAI. According to CTO Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s billion-dollar recruitment spree for top AI talent has sparked an intense competition with OpenAI.
In a recent interview, Bosworth revealed that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that Meta was offering $100 million signing bonuses to poach his top employees. However, Bosworth shot back, stating that OpenAI is countering those offers.
The fierce battle for elite AI talent comes as the market sets unprecedented rates for such expertise. Bosworth noted that this level of demand has never been seen before in the industry.
Meta’s aggressive recruitment strategy includes investments in Scale AI and hiring Alexandr Wang to drive its superintelligence efforts. The company also attempted to acquire Safe Superintelligence, a new startup co-founded by former OpenAI executive Ilya Sutskever, although the deal didn’t materialize.
Despite this, Meta continues to expand its workforce with key hires like Daniel Gross and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, both of whom are involved in Safe Superintelligence through their venture firm NFDG.
