Meta’s Intense 2025: Layoffs, AI Push, and Policy Changes

Meta kicked off 2025 with significant changes, including overhauling its content moderation system, ending Diversity and Equity Initiative (DEI) programs, and announcing layoffs. The company has been busy under new President Biden and in the midst of an AI arms race.

Analysts say that Meta’s past “year of efficiency” is being replaced by an apparent “year of intensity.” CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees to “buckle up” as he looks forward to clearer long-term trajectories for the company. In a controversial decision, Meta has abandoned third-party fact-checking in favor of community notes.

The policy changes have been seen as a way to appease President Trump, who frequently criticized Meta and its CEO. Other big changes include loosening hate speech policies, promoting political discussions, and making personnel changes to help navigate the next four years.

Meta plans to double down on AI, with a significant increase in capital expenditures from $39.23 billion to $60-65 billion. The company expects to hire for priority areas such as infrastructure, monetization, Reality Labs, and generative artificial intelligence.

As Meta navigates the AI arms race, it’s also focusing on setting the standard for open-source AI “for our own national advantage.” The company is excited about its 2025 roadmap and growth momentum driven by AI initiatives.
