A Swedish investigation has uncovered that Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses are sending sensitive footage to human reviewers in Nairobi, Kenya. The contractors who watch these videos claim they have seen intimate moments, including bathroom visits and naked individuals. This raises concerns about Meta’s claims that its smart glasses protect users’ privacy.
In response to the report, a proposed class action lawsuit has been filed, accusing Meta of violating false advertising and privacy laws. The lawsuit argues that by claiming its smart glasses are designed for privacy, Meta failed to disclose the reality of how these devices work. Instead, they allow AI features to capture sensitive moments, which are then shared with strangers around the world.
The contractors who label images for AI systems claim they see everything from living rooms to naked bodies while working in Kenya. A former Meta employee reportedly told Swedish outlets that faces in annotation data are blurred automatically, but this doesn’t always work as intended. Some workers also reported seeing bank cards in footage reviewed by wearers.
