Mexican Mothers Join Search for Missing Arizona Woman

A group of Mexican mothers, known as the Madres Buscadoras de Sonora (Searching Mothers of Sonora), has arrived in Arizona to help find Nancy Guthrie, an 84-year-old woman who went missing from her home in January. The group, which has extensive experience searching for missing people in Mexico’s Sonora state, applied for a permit to search the desert but were denied by local authorities.

Despite this, the Madres are undeterred and have begun distributing flyers with Guthrie’s image while others remain in Mexico to search for signs of her. The group’s leader, Cecilia Flores, says they will do everything possible to help the Guthrie family find Nancy.

Flores started the Madres organization after her three sons disappeared in 2015 and 2019, and has since helped locate over 5,000 people across Mexico. She knows the pain of losing a loved one and is driven by hope that she can find her two missing children.

The FBI has informed Mexican authorities that they have no leads suggesting Nancy Guthrie might be in Mexico. However, officials on both sides of the US-Mexico border had previously been briefed on standard investigative procedures to look for clues related to the case.
