Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expects boxer Julio Cesar Chávez Jr. to be deported to Mexico to serve a sentence for alleged arms trafficking and organized crime. Chávez was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles on Thursday after being found to have made fraudulent statements on his permanent residency application.
Chávez, 39, faces charges related to arms and drug trafficking. His attorney claims he was picked up by federal agents while riding a scooter in front of his home in Studio City, near Hollywood. The arrest came days after Chávez lost a match against influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul.
Immigration authorities detained Chávez for overstaying a tourist visa he entered the US with in August 2023 and expired in February 2024. He has been charged with several crimes while in the US, including DUI, driving without a license, and organized crime.
Chávez’s case involves allegations that he is an affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization. His application for permanent residency was based on his marriage to a US citizen connected to the cartel through a prior relationship with Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s son.
In December 2024, US Citizenship and Immigration Services referred Chávez to ICE as an “egregious public safety threat.” However, the Biden administration allowed him to re-enter the country and parole him into the US. The US Department of Homeland Security is now seeking to deport Chávez to Mexico to serve his sentence.
